GLS Ontario
GLS Ontario was founded in 1992 by a group of not-for-profit agencies that provide services and supports to persons with a Developmental Disability. Initially named, The Great Lakes Society (GLS), we have undergone a complete re-branding in 2017.
Historically, our members have been the foundation of specialized supports within the Developmental Service Sector for both children and adults. Our member agencies continue to be leaders in the field and are active in areas including the Networks of Specialized Care, Provincial Network, Partnership Table, Ontario Association on Developmental Disabilities (OADD), Ontario Association Supporting Individuals (OASIS) and the Developmental Services Ontario Network (regional access points under the Services and Supports to Promote the Social Inclusion of Persons with Developmental Disabilities Act 2008).

Member Agencies
The fifteen GLS member agencies are independent bodies managed by autonomous Boards of Directors in partnership with government and their local communities. Our members provide specialized and clinical services throughout Ontario. Individually, GLS members have been there to support individuals with complex needs to live their lives to the fullest in community based services. Our supports are provided with a clear understanding that the person-directed and clinical approaches are interrelated and are not mutually exclusive. We believe that the supports and services provided by our member agencies represent an essential part of the continuum in the Developmental Services Sector.
In 2013, GLS identified a need to engage in a comprehensive strategic planning process resulting in a revitalized mission, vision, values as well as clearly articulated strategic directions and related workplan. Recognizing the important role of the GLS within the Developmental Services Sector and the number and breadth of activities GLS would engage in, identifying more formal governance policies was viewed to be an essential next step in moving its strategic directions forward. This first Governance Policy Manual is a reflection of this work.
